Depending on country and often times, school policy, salaries can be tax free (Indonesia) but more frequently foreign workers are expected to pay taxes.  However, these are typically low.  Most Asian countries offer a low cost of living if you are prepared to shop in markets and eat locally.  Food and shopping are hall marks of the regions and provide hours of pleasure of fun!  Travel and transport is particularly cost effective, holiday plans are never without extraordinary possibilities!

Why choose Europe?

Don’t be fooled by euro skeptics, Europe continues to be in the forefront for the purchase of designer goods. Who would say no to living and working in some of the most historically and architecturally rich cities in the world? International schools in Rome, Paris, London, Athens, Madrid, Berlin, Vienna and Prague all represent opportunities to explore museums, art galleries, ancient ruins, cultures and religions that have endured for centuries. And did we mention white wonderlands with more options for a skiing holiday than you can collect brochures’ for! With no border controls between many countries in Europe, travel between countries is seamless. Efficient high speed train systems represent a very real alternative to flying with the opportunity to take in spectacular scenery in comfort. Europe continues to be a magnet for Educators wanting to be immersed in art, music, and literature of a kind and at a level not found elsewhere.

Conditions of employment vary in Europe depending on the country. For most international schools in Western Europe, few benefits are offered. Salaries are competitive but are subject to taxes. American teachers may discover that their status is tax free for at least the first two years but not in all countries. You don’t take up an appointment to save a great deal of money in Europe, you come for very different reasons. However, having said that, there is ample disposable income for regular short trips within the host country and other countries in the region. You may need to be prepared to cover the cost of your own accommodation and healthcare is provided locally through excellent hospitals and clinics. You may need to pay into social security but this money is redeemable after a period of time. Eastern European schools are more likely to offer a standard benefit package in addition to competitive salaries. Schools in Hungry, the Czech Republic and Romania for instance offer accommodation, flights, medical insurance in addition to other allowances.
There are fewer teaching opportunities beyond classroom and subject teaching roles in international schools but Language schools employ first language English speakers and there’s a market for private tuition.

In some cities, crime is an issue while in others electric outages or water shortages can be a real concern.
